Materials: – German Westerwald Clay; An Advantage For Potters! The extensive clay quarries of the Westerwald region are the largest connected deposits in Europe. Only a few other regions in the world are known to have clay sources of comparable size and quality. Around 15 different types of clay occur here, including a very valuable white clay also known as “white gold”. The Westerwald clay has a high degree of ductility, is almost free of impurities and has very good sintering properties. These clays are perfectly suited for stoneware production, a high fired, waterproof, acid-resistant, impermeable pottery. The clay was easily kneaded, thrown, deformed as well as knitted, melt, beaten and whipped. It is a serious partner to the potter reacting to any treatment.

Description: – An enchanting Westerwald salt-glazed jug beautifully decorated in sgraffito by Wim Mühlendyck with a stylised traditional design of a strutting cockerill. Truly tactile body which can be used or displayed in any room in your home.

Size & Weight: – The jug is 25.5cm tall to the tip of the pewter lid handle and the body is signed with Mühlendycks studio mark. The weight of the jug is 1415g

Condition: – The beer jug is in excellent condition without any chips, cracks, losses or restoration to the body, pewter lid or decoration. 

Photography: – The photographs are a true likeness of the jug, there may be some slight changes in colour against the real piece or light reflections.

History & Marks:–  Mühlendyck was born in 1905 (son of a pastor). Due to his own deep religiosity he focused a lot of his work and his designs on Christian symbolism as can be seen in many of the pieces decorated by him. Often with crisp sgraffito work, traditional enamels and saltglaze. The jug is marked to the reverse with the incised studio mark which looks like a butterfly.

Further Information:- Wim Mühlendyck was born in Porz-Cologne 1st March 1905. Muehlendyck attended the Hoehr-Grenzhausen Ceramic School in 1927 - 30. He ran his own workshop & pottery in Hoehr-Grenzhausen between 1931 to the 1970's.  He was considered the reviver of Westerwalder ceramics and won many award in his life
